Kyburz, CA – A 61 year old Roseville man became injured at the bottom of a 40 foot embankment while attempting to get to the Silverfork of the American River. He had scrabbled down the embankment with a friend and onto a log when he slipped and fell approximately six feet, just missing falling into the river. Sadly, just two days earlier while camping at the Silverfork Camp Ground his friend’s dog had fallen into the river at the same spot and fell victim to the cold water and current. The two men were returning to the river to morn the lost of the family pet when the accident occurred.
Firefighters/paramedics from the El Dorado County Fire District, firefighters from the U.S. Forest Service, and personnel from the El Dorado County Sheriff’s office responded to the rescue. When U.S.F.S firefighters arrived, they found the victim lying at the bottom of the embankment and started providing care for the victim. When crews from El Dorado County Fire District and the Sheriff’s department arrived they set-up a rope rescue system to bring the victim back up the embankment in a rescue basket. The victim was safely raised up the embankment and was transported by medic unit to Marshall Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Captain Pott, from the El Dorado County Fire District, recommended if you are going out to enjoy our area that you go with a partner. “The victim was very fortunate he was with a friend”. “If he had been by himself, and did not have anyone to go for help, the out come could have been much worse”. He also recommended taking a cell phone, a GPS if you have one, and “always let someone know where you are going”.
