Apprentice Program

The El Dorado County Fire Protection District employs Apprentice Firefighters as entry level firefighters. This position allows for the Apprentice Firefighter to receive on the job training and hands on experience as they begin their journey into the fire service.

Under the supervision of a fire captain and the duty crew, an Apprentice Firefighter performs duties such as emergency response, station and facility maintenance, apparatus maintenance, and training. The Apprentice Firefighter is assigned to an engine company where he or she is able to work alongside a crew of Firefighter/EMTs, Firefighter/Paramedics, Fire Captains, and Fire Chiefs. The working hours consist of a rotating schedule-48 hours on shift followed by 96 hours off.

The requirements to become an Apprentice Firefighter are as follows:

  1. 18 Years old
  2. High school graduate or GED
  3. Valid certification as an EMT-B
  4. Valid CPR for the healthcare provider certification
  5. Valid California Class C Driver’s License
  6. California Firefighter 1 certification or graduation from the El Dorado County Volunteer Recruit Academy
  7. Ability to obtain a California Class B Firefighter Restricted Driver’s License within 6 months of employment
  8. Ability to successfully pass a background check and polygraph test upon employment

The Apprentice Program has a maximum of 3 years of employment with the El Dorado County Fire Protection District. The hiring process consists of the following:

  1. Firefighter written exam consisting of firefighter 1 multiple choice questions
  2. Two oral interviews, one being a Chief interview
  3. Background check and Live Scan
  4. Polygraph test
