Captain Ron Smelser began his career with the fire service after he graduated from high school in 1970. He worked for the California Division of Forestry and for the Shingle Springs Fire Protection District. Ron loved fishing and camping with his family. He was a kind and giving person, who always made time to help his family and friends. He was promoted to the rank of captain, shortly before he passed away of job-related melanoma. Ron was survived by his wife Raeona and children Shawn, Erin and Ryan. The Shingle Springs Fire Protection District consolidated into the El Dorado County Fire Protection District in 1991.
