July 1, 2022, Kyburz, CA — Just before 10:30 am El Dorado County Fire Protection District Engine 17, Medic 25, Engine 26, Water Tender 21 and Division 7705 responded to a tractor-trailer fire on westbound US Highway 50 just east of Kyburz. CAL FIRE - Amador El Dorado Unit and US Forest Service - El Dorado National Forest units also responded to engage in firefighting efforts.
The semi-truck had left the roadway and crashed into a culvert alongside of the two-lane highway. Firefighters also extinguished vegetation fires on the north and south of the highway totaling under an acre in size. Firefighters worked to dam runoff from the vehicle fire as it flowed through the culvert toward the nearby South Fork American River. Holiday weekend traffic was heavily impacted by a full road closure that lasted several hours. Eventually one-way traffic control was reopened as tow and recovery crews removed the charred vehicle. The driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured. California Highway Patrol (CHP), EL Dorado County Sheriff's Office - Office of Emergency Services, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Caltrans, and El Dorado County Environmental Management also responded. The cause of the incident is being investigated by CHP.
