National EMS Week 2022 - Emergency Medical Services for Children Day

May 18, 2022 — It's National EMS Week and today we are recognizing Emergency Medical Services for Children Day.

When a child suffers a medical emergency, their care required is often specialized. Our Paramedics receive additional training on Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), pediatric trauma/burns and safe handling of pediatric patients during transport.

We often use our network of air ambulance providers to put critically injured in the hands of specialty care centers as soon as possible. Pediatric emergency specialty centers include pediatric intensive care units, pediatric burn units, and pediatric trauma centers. UC Davis Medical Center is the only Level 1 pediatric trauma center in the region. We are also lucky to have a pediatric spinal shock and burn specialty center, Shriners Children's Northern California, which is one of only 5 such Children's Hospitals in the nation.

As you can see, it takes a team of EMS workers, air ambulances and regional specialty centers to provide children with the care they need.
